When I hear diabetic socks, I tend to think of people in an old age home and heavy, ugly socks. Imagine my surprise when my socks from the Diabetic Sock Club arrived and they were cozy and light!
What are diabetic socks?
A diabetic sock should be non-restrictive while still being close-fitting. It should alleviate pressure on the foot or leg. A good sock should also help to manage moisture which can reduce the risk of infection.
Why should you use diabetic socks?
If you have diabetes, foot care is important. High blood sugars can cause issues with blood flow and make you more prone to infections. It is therefore important that you do things like
- make sure your toenails are properly cut and maintained
- keep your feet dry at all times
- wear properly fitting shoes
- avoid going barefoot
Does everyone need diabetic socks?
Not everyone needs diabetic socks. Many people with diabetes are prone to foot injury because of poor circulation or something called peripheral neuropathy. This is a loss of feeling in your feet. If this happens, you could easily cut or injure your foot and never feel it. An untreated cut could then go on to become infected and cause serious problems.
Whether you feel that you need diabetic socks or not, WebMD advises that you invest in at least one or two pairs. They will come in handy when you are travelling or if you are on your feet a lot for work.
What to look for in a diabetic sock?
A good diabetic sock will have no seams to prevent rubbing or blisters. They will be made of moisture wicking material that will help to keep your feet dry if you sweat. They will be soft with extra thickness in the heel and ball of your foot. It is also helpful if the socks are a light colour. This will allow you to easily spot any blood or fluids coming from your foot that could signal injury. You will want a sock that is fits well to your foot and doesn’t wrinkle or bunch. Finally, you do not want a sock that stretches or is made of nylon.
Where can you buy diabetic socks?
You can see diabetic socks for sale in your local drug store and many other places. If you want a quality sock, I recommend you check out the Diabetic Sock Club. I was recently sent some sample socks to try out and I was very impressed.
As I said, I tend to think of diabetic socks as rather icky for lack of a better word. The socks from the Diabetic Sock Club changed my mind.
I don’t have diabetes, but I tried a pair to see what I thought of them. Before I tell you my opinion, there are three things that you need to understand about me.
- I hate wearing socks.
- My feet are constantly cold.
- I hate wearing socks!
Imagine my surprise then when I tried the Ultra-soft diabetic socks and LOVED them! They were light enough that I barely knew that they were on my feet. They were cozy and made my feet feel like they were wrapped in pillows. These socks also managed to keep my feet toasty warm without being hot and feeling horrible. Finally, they didn’t slide down and annoy me as the day progressed.
Do Diabetic Sock Club Socks work?
I had planned to give a pair of the socks that I received from the Diabetic Sock Club to my son who has lived with type 1 diabetes for the past 20+ years. He works in the construction industry and can be on his feet for long periods of time. Unfortunately, I did not receive my socks until after I had returned from visiting him, so we will have to wait to hear what he has to say about them.
I did give a pair to a friend who has type 2 diabetes and asked what he thought. He was equally in love. I gave him a pair of the non-binding cotton socks. These are a tall sock and he has very thick calves. He will normally wear ankle socks because anything else digs into his calf.
He found the Diabetic Sock Club socks didn’t cut into him at all. They were light-weight but didn’t slip down. He found them very comfortable and plans to order some for himself in the future.
Why the Diabetic Sock Club?
When you purchase your socks from the Diabetic Sock Club, you get a one-year replacement guarantee! If your socks get a hole or wear out within the first year, just send them back and they’ll replace them at no additional charge. With over 10 years experience in selling the perfect sock, they offer ankle socks, crew socks, ultra-soft socks (my favourite), as well as compression stockings.
Proper foot care is super important for everyone with diabetes. Make sure that you monitor any cuts or scratches on your feet for signs of infection. Always wear proper fitting shoes and consider investing in at least one pair of quality diabetic socks.
