Woman petitions for insulin pump coverage for diabetics

She might not wear a cape or colourful tights, but Leah Wiebe could certainly be viewed as a crusader of sorts. Make that an insulin dependent diabetes (Type I) crusader with great expectations.
Wiebe hopes that if she collects enough signatures on a petition, she'll be able to persuade the government that insulin pumps should be covered under Manitoba Medicare.

Lac du Bonnet resident petitions for insulin pumps
High-tech pump provides many advantages for Type 1 diabetics
Eric Makela, 55, has been living with Type 1 diabetes for 23 years...Makela said the pump’s advantages over injections -- mainly a steady flow of insulin that mimics the natural function of the pancreas -- means cost savings for a government already spending millions on public health care.

Petitions like the one below can also be printed and circulated. Petitions must be printed on 8 1/2x14" paper.  Each page MUST contain all the information noted below.  If your petition is signed by a doctor or health care professional, please ask them to note their title under their name.

PETITION

TO THE LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY OF MANITOBA:

These are the reasons for this petition:

  1. Insulin pumps cost over $6500.00
  2. The cost of diabetes to the Manitoba Government in 2005 will be approx 214.4 million dollars.  Each day 16 Manitobans’ are diagnosed with this disease-compared to the national average of 11 new cases daily.
  3. Good blood sugar control reduces or eliminates kidney failure by 50%, blindness by 76%, nerve damage by 60%, cardiac disease by 35% and even amputations.
  4. Diabetes is an epidemic in our Province and will become an unprecedented drain on our struggling health care system if we don’t take action now.
  5. The benefit of having an insulin pump is it allows the person living with this life altering disease to obtain good sugar control and become a much healthier complication free individual.

We petition the Legislative Assembly of Manitoba as follows:

  1. To request the Premier of Manitoba to consider covering the cost of insulin pumps that are prescribed by an Endocrinologist or Medical Doctor under the Manitoba Health Insurance Plan.
