  Our own Quarter....

Can you picture it? A "Diabetes Awareness" quarter? Above is our vision and we have contacted the Canadian Mint (http://www.mint.ca/browserconfig/detect.aspx?bhcp=1) to see if they could make that vision a reality. Please email them as well. Contact your MP or any other figure that you think could help us with this. The circulation of a diabetes coin would allow us to increase awareness. It would generate conversation and hopefully understanding. Ultimately it would generate more research dollars and one day a cure. Together we can make this happen!! We now have a contact name!! If you are interested in seeing a Diabetes Awareness coin produced, please send your requests to:

Ideas Department
Jennifer Holmes
320 Sussex Drive
Ottawa, ON
K1A 0G8

Get family and friends involved!! Let the Canadian mint know that we do need this level of awareness and that Diabetes is a serious disease that deserves serious recognition!!!

School Initiatives:

Going to school is a stressful time. Going to school after a diagnosis of Type 1 diabetes can be overwhelming. At Diabetes Advocacy we have created a section where parents can come together and share strategies to create real change in their school, in their school district, and in their Ministry of Education.

We invite you to join us. Our goal is the see a policy known as An Individual Medical Care Plan for Children with Life Threatening Illnesses become a standard of care for our children throughout Canada. This will take time. This country is huge and its education system diverse. We are asking you to help us create change. Find a principal who is on your side.  Find a school board trustee who is willing to bring this notion forward.  Contact your Minister of Education and demand change.  Together we can make this happen. Diabetes Advocacy will be with you every step of the way. The more voices we have, the stronger we will be. If you have a support group, get them involved! Family? have them write letters! Let us know what you are doing and we will help you with details, policy outlines and more.

Contact us to have your area added and to let us know what you are doing.

Newfoundland and Labrador:

Please join us by writing letters to the Minister of Education and cc your MHA. Help he/she to understand how a child with diabetes impacts your life. What is it like as a parent sending the child to school? What is it like as an educator to deal with these students? What do you see in the medical profession? In the diabetes care field?  What are your worries? Your concerns? Your needs? My ideal is that an Individual Medical Care Plan for children with chronic illnesses be put in place (see www.diabetesadvocacy.com/diabetes_law.htm ) but the funding to support such a program must also be there.

Please send your letters as soon as you can. Please share it with friends and family and ask them to get involved. The more people we can get on this bandwagon the greater impact we will have. Our children are suffering needlessly. We must work together to protect them. Let us flood the Minister’s office and make the politicians take notice!

Ontario:

Waterloo Region District School Board  They state that their priorites are working Together to Build Great Futures through...
Learning
• student learning opportunities and supports
• supports for vulnerable learners
• student achievement, with emphasis on Literacy and Numeracy
Caring
• safe and secure learning environments
• health and wellness of students and staff
• caring and supportive school cultures and communities
Connecting
• communications with students, parents, community members and staff
• professional learning communities
• quality information for planning, decision-making, and accountability
• operational effectiveness and efficiency

Let's ask them to help us do this for our children with diabetes by creating a policy that would allow for Individual Care Plans for Children with Life Threatening Chronic Conditions. You may wish to try and contact a board member.
The chairperson for this board is Colin Harrington 621-0388.  The vice-chair is Colin Harrington 621-0388 (this information comes from their website).  Other trustees include Cindy Watson, Cathi Smith, Mike Ramsay, Joyce Palubiski, Pat Adamson, Catherine Fife, John Monteith, Stephanie Walker, and Bruce Martin.
Or mail them at:
51 Ardelt Avenue
Kitchener ON
N2C 2R5
(519)570-0003
fax (519)742-1364

Currently, the board is seeking guidance on their budget, perhaps by completing their survey, we can suggest that money spent developing and implementing this care plan should be a serious priority in their next budget!
